Earth-friendly Practices

Thinking outside of the box can make a huge impact.

All of us at ABC are committed to doing what we can to be leaders in protecting our natural resources.

The Power of Palm Oil

You may have noticed a GreenPalm logo on our packaging. Since 2012, ABC has been purchasing GreenPalm certificates to cover the palm oil used in the production of our Girl Scout Cookies. Additionally, we have invested in mass balance sustainable palm oil to help create demand and provide a system for certified sustainable palm oil.

Why Palm Oil?

Girl Scout Cookies Earth Friendly Practices

In our efforts to eliminate trans fats from our cookies, ABC evaluated a number of alternatives to partially hydrogenated soybean oil. For reasons of product quality, we determined that palm oil was our best alternative.

As an official member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), ABC sources palm oil exclusively from RSPO producers and we support the efforts of the RSPO to encourage sustainable farming practices.

We will continue to work with our suppliers to increase our use of sustainable palm oil with a goal to get to 100% segregated sustainable palm oil when it becomes logistically and financially feasible.

Packaging—Outside the Box
In 2010, ABC took our Thanks-A-Lot® Girl Scout Cookie “out of the box.” This single change allowed us to save 150 tons of paperboard from going into America’s waste stream. Plus, we were able to ship more cookies on a single truck, saving an estimated 2,600 gallons of diesel fuel per year.

Taking cookies “out of the box” helped position the Girl Scouts as an innovative, earth-friendly enterprise!

Energy Efficiency
ABC is constantly looking for ways to improve energy efficiency in our factories and in the way we transport cookies. The less we use, the better our planet can be!
